Deconstruction -- a mode of close reading associated with the contemporary philosopher Jacques Derrida and other members of the "Yale School" -- is the current critical rage, and is likely to remain so for some time. Reading Deconstruction / Deconstructive Reading offers a unique, informed, and badly needed introduction to this important movement, written by one of its most sensitive and lucid. It was followed by MacFlecknoe (), an attack on Thomas Shadwell, and Religio Laici (), a poetical exposition of the Protestant layman's creed. In , however, Dryden announced his conversion to Roman Catholicism in The Hind and the Panther.

  To conclude my brief series on Dryden, here’s Religio Selected Poems only has an extract from this of the first lines. The poem is essentially an argument for Religion over Reason. It was, I suspect, quite a counter-cultural poem.
